// The idea

Renting in London alone is hard. Raising kids alone is harder. MaMate is an app, coming soon, for finding a mum nearby to share a home, swap help with the kids, or both. ID-checked mums get a verified badge.

    06 / FAQStraight answers

    Good questions.

The things mums ask us most, answered honestly.

    Joining
    Who can join?

MaMate is for mums raising kids on their own. We're starting in London. Not sure you fit? Email us and ask.

I live outside London. Can I join?

Yes. Join anyway and we'll tell you when MaMate reaches your area. Every sign-up shows us where to go next.

    Is it free? What's Premium?

Joining is free, and helping each other will always be free. Premium adds an ID check and a verified badge. Our first 100 mums get Premium free.

    What happens after I join?

You're on the waitlist. We'll email you when the MaMate app is ready for your area. We don't match anyone by hand: all matching happens in the app.

    Renting together
Does MaMate find homes or deal with landlords?

No. MaMate only helps mums find each other. Finding a home, the tenancy and any agreement are between you, the other mum and your landlord. Good to know: two families in one home can count as an HMO (a house in multiple occupation), so check with your landlord first.

    Will sharing affect my benefits?

It can. When another adult moves in, you lose the 25% single person discount on council tax, though you'll split the bill. Universal Credit housing costs can change too. Check your own case with Citizens Advice or Gingerbread before you move.

I rent from the council or a housing association.

You'll usually need your landlord's permission before anyone moves in, so ask them first. Swapping help with kids is open to everyone.

    Kids and safety
    What are the community rules?
    • No money for childcare. We swap help, we don't sell it.
    • No looking after each other's kids until you've met in person.
    • First meetings in public, with the kids.
    • Be kind and respectful.
    • Break the rules and you're out.
What does the ID check prove?

That someone is who they say they are. It is not a criminal record (DBS) check, so always get to know someone yourself before you trust them with your kids.

    How do I report someone?

Use the report button in the app to report or block anyone. Reported accounts can be paused or removed.

Is MaMate responsible for who I meet?

MaMate is a place to find each other, like any matching app. We don't run background checks, and we're not part of any arrangement you make. You decide who to meet, who to live with and who to trust with your kids, so take your time.

What if a child is in danger?

If a child is in immediate danger, call 999. If you're worried about a child, the NSPCC helpline is 0808 800 5000. You can also report the account in the app.

How do you protect my location and data?

We only ever show your postcode district, never your address. We use your waitlist details only to email you about MaMate and to see where mums are signing up, and we never sell them. More in our privacy policy.
